5 Best Edgar Wright Movies to Watch in 2024

Edgar Wright is one the most celebrated directors of this generation, with most of his movies receiving critical acclaim.

My wife and I became fans of his work right after we watched Baby Driver, so we decided to make it our lifelong mission to watch all of his movies together. That’s what inspired me to make this list in the first place.

Since my wife is Spanish, we often have to watch the Español dub of the movies. When we sat down to watch the fourth movie on this list, we realized that our internet wasn’t working. Long story short, turns out I had forgotten to pay for our internet bill. Silly me. Thankfully, she was able to cover for me by paying it using the Optimum Español pagos option, which offers full Spanish support.

Anyway, here are the best Edgar Wright movies to watch in 2024.

Three Flavours Cornetto

So, Three Flavours Cornetto isn’t the name of the actual movie. This is a trilogy that consists of three loosely connected movies. Since these movies aren’t linked by their storylines, there isn’t a “wrong” way to watch them.

So, I just recommend watching them in the order of their release. These are:

  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)
  • Hot Fuzz (2007)
  • The World’s End (2013)

The series stars some of the same actors like Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Bill Nighy, and Martin Freeman. From a zombie movie to buddy-cop and a science-fiction movie, this comedy series of movies has some of the best humor I’ve watched on screen.

By the end of this movie series, you’re going to be left wondering why there aren’t more of these movies.

Turns out, Edgar Wright’s comedic genius mind just doesn’t end here.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

This movie is an adaptation of the comic series of the same name. I’ve heard so much of this movie and after I watched it, I wondered why I didn’t watch it sooner.

The movie is about Scott Pilgrim, who plays in a band and is dating a high schooler. His life takes a turn when he meets a mysterious girl who he starts falling for. Quickly, he finds out that he has to defeat her seven evil exes to date her.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World‘s direction is near perfect. There are quick cuts, music that matches the scene, and visual gags that make it look straight out of a comic book.

So, if you’re a fan of comic book action movies and video games, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of the best movies to watch.

Baby Driver

This is one of the most unique mainstream action movies I’ve seen in a while.

Baby Driver is about a getaway driver named Baby, who uses the beat of music to create scenes in his imagination while driving around criminals during heists. He creates the perfect soundtrack for every job he goes on.

Baby decides to leave the criminal business once he meets a waitress named Debora, but finds out that leaving crime is harder than he thought.

The soundtrack used for this movie is simply amazing and Wright does an amazing job syncing the scenes to the music, which feels weirdly satisfying to watch. The story is a little cookie-cutter, it plays out brilliantly and the actors have done an amazing job portraying their characters.

One of Edgar Wright’s recent works, Last Night in Soho shows how much he has advanced as a director.

The movie starts with Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer, moving to London to pursue her dreams. Soon after she reaches London, she has a vivid dream where she gets transported to the 60s. There, she experiences the life of Sandie, a confident young woman who dreams of being a singer.

However, things go south when Ellie starts seeing disturbing things in her dreams, which start to haunt her in real life as well.

With this movie being his first foray into horror, I didn’t expect the movie to be good. While the movie starts slow, it quickly builds up its pace and pays off with some amazing, unexpected twists that are going to keep you hooked till the end.

The Sparks Brothers

Where all previous Edgar Wright movies have been pure fiction, The Sparks Brothers shows how a rock band can be underrated, and overlooked but extremely successful and influential.

The documentary is about Russell and Ron Mael, also popular as the Sparks, who have a vast range of styles, from early synth-pop to British-Invasion pop rock to orchestral radio opera.

Its film-making approach is typical by documentary standards, Edgar Wright injects some of his magic into the format. He utilizes several animation methods to show the band’s different eras. There’s even a claymation segment in the documentary, that’s going to make you want an animated film from the director.

While the documentary is a great watch, it feels a little restricted due to the documentary format, which makes it one of the least popular projects by the director.

There are a lot of other Edgar Wright movies you can watch, but to us, these five movies are some of the best ones we have seen. Each has its personality, and if you decide to watch them in the order I mentioned, you will see the growth of Edgar Wright as a director.
